The foundations that you see were excavated between 1960 and 1968 and were actually owned by a Celtic tribal chief (Cogidubnus) who was an ally of the Romans. There are special exhibits at the museum that are dedicated to the Royal Air Force and how they waged war with the Germans over Southern England during the World War Two. It was however the 1st Lord Percy of Alnwick who began restoration on the castle back in the early fourteenth Century and today parts of this still remain.

Caribbean Holidays

So today I have just returned home from a lovely trip to the Caribbean. To be honest I am quite surprised that I actually ended up going, because getting there was seemed like a million miles away.

Anyhow this is my whole story of my amazing trip to the Caribbean, it all started when me and my partner decided to book somewhere for our honeymoon. The Caribbean holidays destinations looked very appealing and somewhere that we have wanted to go for a very long time.

After the great wedding we had experienced, we were so glad to be flying out to the hot islands the next day. In the morning we woke and awaited our pre booked taxi. After 30 minutes or so we started to get worried that it was not coming, we were not really that far away from the airport so decided to catch a bus.

It was an absolute shocker of a decision as we got stuck in lots of jams. I totally thought we missed our plane after turning up hours late. I think we had a bit of chance as the flight was running late. Yes!

Well what can I say when we got there the weather and hotel were amazing. The food was totally gorgeous and the beaches were like paradise. We have a great 2 weeks at the destination and it is definitely somewhere that I would like to visit again if I get the chance.

Anyone who is reading this I sincerely hope that if you are going on honeymoon that you consider go to any of the Caribbean islands as they are truly and utterly mind blowing. You have great weather, great beaches and great hotels and food what more could you possibly ask for.

4.    Sea Fari Adventures – This attraction gives you the chance to come into close contact with some of the Argyll coasts' wildlife. During your visit you will hopefully get to see some whales, seals, dolphins and porpoises along with the native deer and eagles. You can spend as much as a whole day at sea whale watching if you want to.

5.    Oban Chocolate Company – This is a place that both adults and children alike will enjoy visiting. Oxford: What To Do When You Visit Oxford

There are plenty of things for you to see and do when you visit the university city of Oxford. The river Thames and the river Cherwell run through the city and meet just south of its centre. If you want why not spend some time relaxing and just strolling along the banks of either of these.

1.    The Ashmolean Museum is Britain's first museum and is still thought to be one of the greatest in the world. In fact when this was founded the term museum had not even been coined and its creator based it on a collection of natural history specimens brought together by John Tradescant and his son and which were then given to Elias Ashmole. He then had a special building erected in which the collection could be housed and it first opened its doors to the public in May 1683. In 1718 the Alfred Jewel was added to the collection.

As the size of the collection grew, the original building became too small and a new museum building was erected and opened in 1894. Then by the end of 1908 the collection of items collected and displayed in the Ashmolean were merged with an art gallery and that is what you will see today.

2.    Originally called the Physic Gardens, the Oxford Botanic Gardens were founded by Henry Danvers in 1621 so that he as the Earl of Danby could study medicinal plants. The garden cost £5,000 to create (a large sum at this time) and was built on the site of a form medieval Jewish cemetery. Ragwort, a plant which is now common throughout England, was propagated from seeds that came from Mount Etna. This is now the oldest surviving botanic gardens to be found in England and along with the herb and medicinal plants one can view tropical lilies, palms and other arid zone plants in the glasshouses. There is also a wonderful rock garden and bog garden for you to enjoy when you visit this beautiful attraction.

3.    Located on Oxford High Street is the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. This is a very important building in Oxford University's history. It was in the walls of this building that the first library for the university was established and it is believed that in the early part of the 12th Century Masters and students were gathered at it.

But what makes this so important is that this is where the trial took place of the Bishops Latimer and Ridley along with Archbishop Cranmer for heresy in 1555. They soon became known as the "Oxford Martyrs". It is on one side of Radcliffe Square and facing it is the Radcliffe Camera. One of the buildings most notable features is the spire which contains components from when it was originally constructed in the 13th Century. Plus if you are willing to climb the towers 127 steps you are offered wonderful views of the city from the top.

Car Travel Games: 6 Quick and Easy Ideas

Nothing makes a road trip creep along more than having a car full of bored children. If you heard “Are we there yet?” a few too many times on your last trip, here are some ideas for fun family travel games.

1. The License Plate Game. This classic will have your children busy looking at cars and learning a little about geography at the same time. Before you head out on your trip, print out a list of all 50 states and give a copy to each of your kids. You can have them compete individually to get the most states, or better yet, work together as a team for a family record. You can give out a new sheet for each leg of the trip or tally up the total license plates for the entire trip.

2. Joke Bowl. Have a "Joke Bowl" on the way to your destination. Before you get started, let your family know that they each need to collect at least ten jokes for the trip. Have one person start out the joke bowl as soon as you see the first green highway sign, and then go in a clockwise direction. The whole group votes on a winner and then that person gets to start out the next time you see a green highway sign. The person who wins the most rounds gets a special prize.

3. Wipe Clean Games. Make your own “wipe clean” games by laminating mazes and word games from activity books. You can even create your own or print them from online. Give your children dry erase markers or overhead projector pens. They can reuse the pages again and again throughout the car trip.

4. Counting Cows. This game is simple to understand but also very challenging. Divide your family into two teams, based on the two different sides of the car. Count all the cows you see along the way. If you pass by a crowded field, you'll need to count really fast! Each person keeps track of their own cow count, and you lose your cows if a cemetery passes by your side of the car and someone else says "All your cows are buried!"

5. Make your own Mad Libs. Before you head out on the road, collect a few short stories and remove some of the words and write down what part of speech those words are. While you're traveling, have your kids call out suggestions and then read back your silly stories.

6. Read a book. Reading a book out loud can make a car trip go a lot faster for the people who are listening. Take along a few short chapter books to read to your children. If your stomach can't handle reading in the car, rent or download a few audiobooks to listen to as a family.

The port and town of Falmouth is located on the River Fal and is on England’s south coast in the County of Cornwall. Just south east of Falmouth is Pendennis Castle which is situated across the harbor from its castle St Mawes. Both castles were built in the time of the Tudors and were built to form a defensive chain along the south coast during the reign of Henry VIII. These castles were built to act as a deterrent against either the French or Spanish invading England.

Pendennis castle has been used regularly over the years and this means that it is still in excellent shape. Budgeting for a Family Vacation

At the heart of every good vacation is knowing you're getting what you've paid for. Somehow sipping a pina colada poolside while your kids frolic in the pool feels that much more relaxing -- and sweeter -- knowing you've gotten a deal. For Leah Ingram of New Hope, PA, a recent trip to Disney World was made more enjoyable knowing she and her family were doing everything they wanted -- within budget. How'd she do it? By shopping around for bargains, flying into Tampa, rather than Orlando and staying off Disney property. All told, she spent $1,160 for a four-day trip for her family of four. "We were willing to be flexible, and I think that helped," she says. For example, she used Priceline.com to find a hotel room. Her original bid was $50 a night in the Lake Buena Vista area (where Disney is located). When that didn't work, she raised it to $75 and widened her net, this time including Orlando proper. She found a deal at the Sheraton World on International Drive, where it turned out Priceline and Discover were doing a promotion and would knock the nightly rate to $50 if you applied online for a credit card.

Whether you want to admit it or not, money is a big part of your vacation experience. Feeling like you're being nickled and dimed to death puts a dent in your wallet -- and in your fun. There's nothing worse than waking up in an expensive resort room feeling like you'd rather be home -- a scenario that happened to me and my family on a recent trip to Florida's East Coast.

Simple planning and forethought are all that's needed for a good experience. My Florida mistake was that I hadn't done my homework. Ingram did. And you can too.

**Budget Know How**

The first rule of thumb, say travel industry insiders, is coming up with a detailed budget and sticking to it. You can even go so far as to create a vacation account (if putting money aside won't cost extra at your bank). If you have your paycheck direct-deposited, have a certain amount put into a separate account.

Another money-saving option: get a credit card that offers frequent flyer miles and use it everywhere, so you can cash in come trip-time. Or look for promotions, as Ingram did with Discover and Priceline.

Advance planing also helps, as Ilene Gordon of Potomac, MD can attest to. She and her family sit down and talk about where they'd like to go, then book within reason -- a year in advance.

"Booking ahead is important to getting a fair rate," confirms Cathy Palaez of New Jersey-based Liberty Travel. "Family travel is centered around school holidays, making space at a premium. The farther out you book, the better your chances that you will get what you want. It's a question of supply and demand. When demand is high, prices are high." She suggests planning trips ten months to a year in advance, so you "get what you want and don't feel like you have to settle for what you can get."

Gordon also involves her sons, 9 and ll, in their vacation discussions. Before a trip,
she and her husband give the boys a certain amount of money (or have them use their allowance) so there's a limit to souvenir spending.

Kathy McNally, Vice President for National Financial Literacy with Silver Spring, MD-based National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), a non-profit
organization for consumer credit counseling, says involving kids at a young age, say five plus, makes for a good lesson in money matters. "Children begin to understand the meaning of budgeting when they have to empty out their piggy banks or use their own money for souvenirs."

Last, but not least: save change: it can add up. Kelly Newcomb of Summit, NJ, says her family keeps a gallon jug in their kitchen and periodically fills in with coins and the occasional dollar bills. When they emptied it last year, they had a whopping $500 -- enough for a trip to Grand Cayman. While your jar may not have that much, just emptying it at vacation time can mean extra spending money for your kids -- or you.

**Do Your Homework**

Once you've figured out how much your budget is, you can narrow down your vacation options. Do you want to beach-it? Visit a city? Go back to a favorite theme park? Opt for skiing? Tour a national park? Often, just being a native in your own city is a wonderful inexpensive vacation option, as is staying with friends (within reason). Think about staying one or two nights with a friend -- as Ingram and her brood did in Tampa -- then opt for a hotel room for the next few evenings. Or think about tacking on vacation days to a business meeting Mom or Dad may have to attend, as at least one airfare is already covered.

As you're doing your research, think creatively: may want to stay in all-inclusive resort, like Beaches or a family-run resort like The Tyler Place in Highgate Springs, Vermont (my family's favorite), so you know up front how much you're spending and don't have to worry about hidden extras. I personally like budgeting $3,000 for our week (food, taxes, activities, cabin costs) at The Tyler Place and knowing we won't go over that. Family-friendly cruises such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Disney are other viable options as you pay for just about everything beforehand.

Packages are another buzz-word when it comes to looking for bargains, but beware of hidden amenities you don't need. You don't want to stay at a resort with amenities you're paying for, but will never use. Be on the lookout for family-friendly plans offered by many hotels and resorts, such as Hyatt, Loew's, Holiday Inn and Radisson properties. Some will offer substantial discounts (25 to 50%) off a second (adjoining) room, along with other amenities such as babyproofing, cookies and milk at turndown, coloring kits, as well as an array of children's activities. Holiday Inn Buena Vista Family Suites, near Disney World, is one example of a hotel that is big on discounts. Every room is a themed-suite, the most desirable for families being the Kidsuites, complete with bunkbeds, Nintendo, a kid's desk, TV and games.

Be money savvy when choosing accommodations. Staying at hotel or motel that's two blocks away from beach instead of right on beach will save you some money as will considering a condo or house rental. Any room with a kitchen can help you cut back on restaurant expenses by making some meals yourself instead of eating out three times a day. Los Angeles mom Laura Travis says it's easier to pour a couple bowls of cereal in a kitchenette, rather than getting three sleepy boys out of pajamas and into a restaurant -- where cereal is often over-priced anyway.

No matter what, always ask for discounts, and don't forget to mention to a reservationist if you're a member of AAA or another organization that offers occasional savings.

If you want to stay somewhere really inexpensive, say $15 to $25 a night, consider a hostel -- they're no longer catering solely to the backpacking crowd and many are family-friendly; 202-783-6161 for Hostelling International or www.hiayh.org. Camping is another inexpensive option.

Thinking creatively also works when considering transportation. Look into taking a train ride (a trip in itself!) Consider the age -- and fatigue factor -- of kids, however. Some parents find it's worth paying for a nonstop flight simply for less aggravation.

Ask questions before you book so you're not surprised by hidden costs. I didn't know that the Florida resort we stayed in last summer charged extra for the kid's program. At
$20 a day and two kids, that added up -- something I would have known if I had done my homework better.

Be flexible, too, with your travel plans. "Everyone wants to stay over Saturday night," says Palaez, "but if you can go Tuesday to Tuesday or Monday to Thursday, that helps, as these are often less-traveled days."

If you can, consider travelling off-season. Think about going hiking or camping at a destination that's primarily a ski resort. Or go to the Caribbean in the summer. You'll generally find fewer crowds and less expensive airfares.

If your kids are not yet in school full-time, you can avoid peak travel simply by traveling when other people's kids are in school.

Most important: shop around. Here's where the Web comes in. Doing research online has become one of the most popular ways to surf the internet, according to Linda Daly at Yahoo Travel. Many sites make it easy by giving you spending limits and offering departing and arriving cities so you can figure out airfare. Some easy to navigate sites include yahoo, libertytravel, 1travel.com, and travelocity. It's also worth checking out the travel guidebook sites such as frommers.com (the Arthur Frommer site), and Fodors.
Travel agents, travel guidebooks and your local Sunday newspaper are another way to find bargains.

**Once There**

When possible, pay cash or travelers checks. Hotel, car, and airlines are often more convenient on a credit card. If you plan to use credit, keep a running list of purchases, says McNally, as they can add up fast. Decide before you leave how much of your budgeted funds will be credit purchases and have a plan to pay off the balance within three months of your return.

Buy miscellaneous items, i.e. batteries, film, and even "kiddie staples," like Goldfish, fruit roll-ups, peanut butter, bread and Cheerios beforehand as these items are guaranteed to be more expensive at your vacation destination. Stock up, too, on medicines, such as Tylenol, Calamine lotion, Band-aids-aids, sunscreen, etc.

What To See and Do When You Stay in Salisbury

Salisbury is located in the heart of the county of Wiltshire and has much to offer visitors. 1.    Stonehenge – This is of course one of the most well known of all the attractions to be found close to the city of Salisbury. This famous stone circle features stones that were erected here between 3,000 and 1,600 BC. The way the stones have been erected is based on the way in which the sun rises and sets. While you are at Stonehenge, take time out to see some of the other 400 scheduled monuments which surround it as well.

2.    Salisbury Cathedral - The building of this wonderful cathedral was completed in 1258. But it isn't just the Cathedral that needs to be explored the area surrounding it is wonderful as well and provides a haven of tranquility in this rural Wiltshire town.

3.    Longleat – If you want something to keep the kids amused for the day then a visit to this attraction is a must. There is a stately home to explore, extensive grounds surrounding it, and of course the Wildlife park. This Elizabethan property is set in gardens that were landscaped by Capability Brown. Along with the house to explore there are plenty of attractions surrounding it including a maze and butterfly house. But of course what everybody really comes to Longleat for is to view the lions, tigers, wolves and other exotic creatures in the safari park.

4.    Farmer Giles Farmstead - This is located a short drive from Salisbury in the Wiltshire downs. If your children have never met farm animals face to face before this is a great place to introduce them to them. Depending on the time of the year, you may have the opportunity to bottle feed the lambs or young goats. You can also pet the donkeys and ponies. If they have some extra energy which needs to be gotten rid of then let them explore the adventure playground.

There is also a restaurant on site for you to relax and enjoy a well-deserved rest. The restaurant offers good quality home cooked meals and there is a bouncy castle, sandpit and play area for the younger children to enjoy.

Things To Do When You Visit Kendal

Traveling with Teenagers? Make it More Fun

For many teens, the idea of spending the summer cooped up with the family for a vacation is less than appealing. And that means that you could end up with a surly, snarly member of the family on your trip.

But it doesn't have to be that way. It is possible to travel with a teenager and have a good time. With a few simple steps, you'll be able to meet your teen's needs and have a peaceful vacation.

1. When you are planning your vacation, do your best to remember what it was like to be a teenager. Sometimes it's easy to forget how embarrassing it is to be stuck with your parents on a road trip. Teenagers crave freedom and independence, which isn't always possible on a family vacation. Once you understand a bit about what your teen needs, you can take steps to meet those needs within reason.

2. As much as possible, let your teen help with the planning. You can really let your teenagers experience independence by allowing them to get more involved with the planning. Ask them to do some research on travel coupons and discounts. Ask them to take a look at online travel sites, such as Travelocity and Orbitz, to find ideas on must-see places to visit.

Get their input on where you'll go and what kind of travel arrangements you'll make. Make sure your teenagers understand that this is a collaborative process and not an opportunity for them to get everything that they want. Let them choose something small, such as a rest stop along the way or a specific tourist destination. They'll feel more involved and like a part of the family this way and they'll appreciate being treated in a mature fashion.

3. Continue the group decision-making process when you hit the road. Consult with them on restaurant choices, or get input on vacation souvenirs. Include your teen in major decisions and they'll stay happy throughout the course of the trip.

4. Allow your teen a bit of freedom and space on the trip, especially when you are walking around in public. Allow him or her to walk a bit behind you and physically separate from the family. Nothing will embarrass a teen more than being joined at the hip to parents. You don't need to completely let your teen loose to allow them to feel freedom.

5. Try not to embarrass your teenager while you are out and about. What may have been seen as funny behavior a few years ago is now probably mortifying to your teen. Don't try to pull them out of their shell if they want to sit in the corner and listen to their iPod. Teenagers need time away from their family, particularly because you're all in such close quarters.

6. Give your teen something to be in charge of during the trip, such as the photography or video equipment. Most teenagers like electronics and giving them these responsibilities will keep their minds on getting a task done and away from sulking. No matter what duties you give to your teen, make sure it's not babysitting. This is their vacation too and they don't want to spend the whole time taking care of younger siblings.

You can't ensure that your teen won't sulk and detach the entire time (he or she is a teenager after all! But with these tips, you'll be able to enjoy your family vacation a little more this year.

1.    Culzean Castle – This sits on the cliff tops overlooking Ayr. The castle is open most days and it also offers accommodation for longer stays. The top floor of the castle was converted into an apartment in the 1940's for General Eisenhower to use. He actually used the apartment on several occasions including one time when he was President of America. 3.    Burns Cottage & Museum – This is the house where Robert Burns was born and is located in a suburb of Ayr known as Alloway. 4.    Robert Burns Monument – From here you have wonderful views looking out over the River Ayr and the two bridges which cross it. The monument has been standing here since 1823 and inside it features over six hundred exhibits about Robert Burns. One of the two bridges you can see is Auld Brig. Which Burns prophesized would have to be rebuilt. This prophecy was realized when the original bridge had to be rebuilt in 1877.

The idea for national parks first started in the United States and one of the first national parks was Yosemite of course.

The New Forest has a few endangered species itself but nothing like the American bald eagle that is now increasing in numbers due thankfully. The most well know animals in the Forest are the deer which were once hunted here and the delightful New Forest ponies.

Centuries and centuries ago the New Forest was to all intents and purposes open land but then one of the kings on of the day decided to make it a royal forest only to be used for the royal pursuit of hunting, and local folk who had lived off the land for centuries found themselves unable to hunt the land for food to feed their family, penalties for contravening the law were severe and in later time fatal.

Fortunately over time sanity prevailed and today you will find many animals wandering the forest grazing as the local "commoners" exercise their right to graze their live stock on the common ground.

Other forests around the world have massive and very old species of trees, and although the forest cannot boast trees like the giant redwoods, the New Forest is still one of the oldest forests in the UK with the oldest resident oak being circa 400 years old.

You want to move to France. But you need to earn a living. What can you do? If you are happy living in a big city, this is usually not a problem. There are plenty of jobs available translating, teaching English and working for companies that require English speakers. For instance, the British Automobile Association has a large call-centre based in Lyon. Lyon also happens to be the home for English-speaking organisations such as Interpol and Euronews. You'll find similar jobs available in the other large cities, especially Paris. So you can almost definitely get a job in big cities, although you would normally expect to have a job of a lower status and salary than in your own country.

However, most of us looking to move to France don't want to move to big cities. That's the sort of lifestyle we are trying to escape. We want to live a gentler lifestyle in some secluded rural part of France. What are our job prospects there?

The first thing to say is that the reason that these parts of France are so quiet and rural is that there is very little industry or commerce. Such regions depend mainly on agriculture (and the famous EU subsidies.) The main reason that these areas are so quiet is because young French people don't want to (or are not able to) live there because of a lack of employment opportunities.

So how can you find a job where the local young French population cannot? The main asset that you have that they don't have is that you speak good English. As long as you also speak passable French, you may be able to get a job in the tourism industry, perhaps as a guide or as a waiter/waitress. Or you could get a job helping new English people who want to buy property in France. One possibility is to work for an estate agent, though this is a heavily regulated industry where you may be required to obtain qualifications. If you have building skills, many English-speaking people moving into the area (Dutch and German as well as British and Irish) will choose you over French speaking artisan. However the path chosen by many people is to run a gite - a self-catering cottage. This can be a good source of income and we'll look more at this next time.

Grand Ole Opry, Nashville’s Number One Drawing Card

From its small origins, the Grand Ole Opry has become an American gem, and anyone thinking about a Nashville vacation knows, the Opry is Nashville’s most popular drawing card. It began as a live music radio presentation in 1925, and just kept going and in full swing. And now it has outlasted thousands of other broadcasts to be the oldest continuous radio broadcast in America. It is also broadcast on XM Radio, and is on television on Saturdays on the Great American Country network.

The Grand Ole Opry initially started out just five years after commercial radio broadcasting was began in N. America. In 1925, a radio station was established in Music City by an insurance company (National Life and Accident) expecting that this fresh programming medium could be employed to sell insurance policies. Country music fans are acquainted with the station's call letters, WSM, but most don't know that WSM stood for the company's slogan: "We Shield Millions."

National Life hired one of the nation's most popular radio announcers, George D. Hay, as WSM's program director. On November 28, 1925, the 30 year old Hay named himself "The Solemn Old Judge" and established the show that would become known as the WSM Barn Dance.

George D. Hay's weekly Barn Dance programs became tremendously popular, and in 1927 he renamed it the Grand Ole Opry. Swarms of fans filled up the studio as they came to see & hear the singers & pickers, so National Life established a larger auditorium with a capacity of 500. In 1932, WSM grew their transmitter power to 50,000 watts and most of the country could hear the Opry on Saturday evenings.

The crowds kept increasing, so in 1934 the Opry moved from its station studio to the Hillsboro Theater (now the Belcourt in Green Hills). The crowds kept increasing, so next the Opry moved to the Dixie Tabernacle in East Nashville, then to the War Memorial Auditorium next to the State Capitol.

In 1943, still requiring more capacity, the Opry moved to the Ryman Auditorium, where it stayed put until 1974, when it moved to its modern home, the 4,400 capacity Grand Ole Opry House, adjacent to the Opryland Hotel, where you can see shows several times each week, except for several weeks in winter when the Opry goes back to the Ryman Auditorium.

On the stage of the new Opry House, there's a six-foot circle of dark colored, oak floor; it's shiny but visibly worn. Taken from the stage of the Opry's renowned previous home base, the Ryman Auditorium, this circle of oak gives fledgling fans and old timers alike the chance to sing on the identical spot that formerly supported Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, Uncle Dave Macon, and others.

There have been loads of changes at the Opry over the years - its members, its music, and its home. But that dark oak circle remains, a reminder for every singer who stands on it that they are partaking in something that's much larger than themselves, and wherever they may go they are coupled to the legends who came before.

The Opry’s artists and music have defined Country & western in the USA. Hundreds of musicians have played as members over history. Being rewarded with membership in the Grand Ole Opry, country’s most enduring “Hall of Fame”, is to be tapped as one of the most elect musicians of country music.
