Alicante - Don't Just Drive Through It

Since it's a gateway into the Costa Blanca, Alicante is a perfect base for touring. With a refreshing melange of ancient and modern traditions and culture, Alicante is found within the popular holiday area of the Costa Blanca. Visitors to Alicante will enjoy sunny and warm climate, some of the best beaches Spain has to offer as well as some great examples of Moorish architecture.

Found on the coast between the resorts of Benidorm and Elche, Alicante city sits in the shadow of its mountain top castle. Alicante and the surrounding areas are scattered with churches with the most photographed of them all being that of the Iglesia de Santa Maria. This is the oldest church in the city and was constructed between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries being at one time a mosque. The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas was built in the seventeenth century in honour of the city's patron saint and is therefore one of the most significant buildings in the region.

Alicante has lots of monuments to satisfy historians and sightseers and can be seen throughout the city with statues and columns adding interest to a number of once unexciting locations. Keeping a sharp watch out to Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is recognised as one of the biggest medieval fortresses in Europe. Easily reached by car or by elevator (lift) from the Paseo Maritimo, the castle has unbeatable views of the stunning local region. In addition to the benefits the Castillo has on offer, Alicante offers more architectural gems including the nineteenth century bullring and the Provincial Gallery (formerly the Gavina Palace). All of the Alicante attractions are easily accessible using an Alicante Airport hire car. Arranging your car rental online will normally produce big savings together with ensuring that the model of car that you want to book is guaranteed to be available when you arrive at the airport.

Alicante is the ideal resort to come to enjoy yourself and the leading reason tourists return every year. With such a huge range of accomodation available, there are plenty of cheap Alicante Hotels to suit every pocket and taste. The beaches here have the most golden sand and consist of both easy to get to as well as secluded coves ideal for private sunbathing. Head over to Albufereta Beach where there is excellent range of water sports. It is a quiet spot that is relatively undiscovered by the tourist masses.

The perfect place for an evening stroll is offered by the Playa del Postiguet. You will be joined by the locals along this enchanting sea view - it's a perfect location for a romantic evening. Formerly known as the Port serving Madrid, Alicante Harbour offers a combination of sailing with fishing and is the perfect venue to come to find the top fish restaurants in town. The harbour provides a good source of activity day and night. This is where visitors come to eat wonderfully delicious, fresh fish, learn to sail and finish the day off with a bit of clubbing into the early hours.

Nobody enjoys a knees up as much as the inhabitants and visitors of Alicante! Here you will find an event of one type or another taking place much of the time, no matter what time of the year you choose to visit. One of the more sombre of Costa Blanca festivals is the Easter Procession. Adorned in black and carrying lighted candles, an effigy of Jesus is carried on a cross around the streets. Each November, in order to honour the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, every town has its own fiesta. Don't be surprised to find that shops are closed all day, every day as everything stops for this fantastic combination of dancing, singing and firework displays. On a lighter note, one of the most renowned local festivals is that of the International Puppet Festival.
